The War of
Rebellion defined us as a people at tremendous cost in treasure and blood.
The common Union soldier felt a personal connection to Abraham Lincoln.
Whenever he could, Lincoln would come and greet new arriving troops as they
came to Washington. He would sit in a buggy and tip his hat to them. The
soldiers called him “Old Abe” or “Father Abraham." They all agreed that he
had a care worn appearance as if he carried the weight of the world on his
shoulders. He was an endearing figure. Many felt seeing him was a special
moment in their lives.
They revered each other. They truly were “Lincoln’s Army."
