Uniform of Captain Samuel
M. Titus
Pennsylvania 11th
Cavalry, Company M, Circa 1861
This Frock Coat has the
yellow straps of a Cavalry Officer and the appropriate ?C? buttons as well.
The Coat belonged to Sam Titus who had quite a historic career. Sam joined
the Cavalry as a Sergeant in August of 1861 and left the service just two
months before Lee?s surrender at Appomattox Court House. His old Regiment
was there for the surrender and participated in the spontaneous salute
accorded to the men of the Army of Northern Virginia as they passed in
review. Sam became a Captain in June of 1864. He more then likely just
replaced the straps on his Lieutenants uniform as it was the same
configuration. The Coat saw service for three years before he was promoted
to Major which required a new uniform. Shortly after his promotion, Titus
was wounded and captured in October of 1864. He survived and was mustered
out February 17, 1865. Major Titus had fought virtually through the entire
war. |
