Uniform of Charles
Bradley Stoughton
Colonel, 4th Vermont Infantry
This uniform is
interesting for its contrast in size. Stoughton was small in stature but
not in fight. He wore his uniform ?wasp waisted.? He was small even by
Civil War standards. He was the brother of the infamous General Edwin H.
Stoughton. Hapless Edwin was captured early in the war during a night raid
conducted by no less then John Mosby, the famous Confederate raider. Later
in the war he was returned through exchange only to cashiered for his
shame. Charles felt his brother?s shame and attempted to win back the
family honor at any and all opportunities. He constantly put himself in
dangerous situations to prove his bravery and redeem his brother?s honor.
He lost an eye in battle and his valor elevated him to the rank of
General.
