Enlisted Artillery
Uniform - Unknown Service
This Artillery Frock Coat
with it’s red piping is of unknown origin. What is known is that it came
from a family in the Aurora, Illinois vicinity. It was manufactured by a
Government Contractor and shows signs of use. The coat came with an Indian
war Sack coat with the comment it was from the same party. Perhaps this
indicates continued service in the army following the war.
Also shown is the Enlisted Artillery Shell Jacket - Unknown Origin
This short coat was for
alternate use by Artillery enlisted men. Again, recognized as Artillery by
it’s red piping. The short coat was preferred while riding mounted. This
example may well be one of the thousands of un-issued jackets sold after the
war by the surplus dealer Bannerman of New York as it appears unused. |
