Uniform of Lt. Col. Norman Smith

13th Infantry, Company H - Circa 1862

This Uniform has both  exceptional details and an exceptional battle history. This coat has a rolled velvet collar which was an extra appointment  as well as sporting full dress epaulettes. Smith was born June 1, 1832 in Windsor, Vermont. He enlisted in a farming Regiment in West Stewartstown September 19, 1862. He was elected Captain of Company H, 13th New Hampshire Infantry and was commissioned a Major in July of 1864 and a Lt. Colonel in October. He was wounded at Fort Harrison, Virginia on September29, 1864. Smith saw quite a bit of action. Fredericksburg, Drewry?s Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, The Battle of the Crater (Siege of Petersburg) and the Defense of Fort Harrison. Smith was one of the first Union officers to enter Richmond, the Confederate capital. On his arrival he was appointed Officer of the Day and Provost Marshall. Smith stayed on in the South as a ?Carpetbagger? through Reconstruction and finally was buried in Richmond
