Uniform of an Artillery Major - Unknown Origin

You will note that the button configuration of this Frock Coat is different. There are fourteen buttons in two rows of seven. This indicates a rank of Major, Lieutenant Colonel, or Colonel. This coat is an unidentified Artillery Major. The straps are of a different type then normally seen. They have red cloth centers but the rest is made from metal. These are referred to as ?Smith Patent? straps. They try to have an embroidered appearance. The thought being that these were more durable then the ordinary embroidered straps. The real embroidery seems to have lasted 144 years pretty well..
