Hats: McDowell

McDowell Forage Cap (Kepi) Model of 1858/1861

These were the most popular headgear worn by the Union Army. It replaced the 1851 Shako which was not very liked. The kepi was introduced just in time to become the signature headgear of the Civil War soldier. General Irvin McDowell of Bull Run infamy had been photographed a great deal wearing this style cap until it finally came to bear his name.
