Uniform of Major William H. DeCamp
1st Michigan Engineers
This
is an example of a Regimental Surgeon's frock coat. DeCamp enlisted in
September of 1861 at Grand Rapids, MI at the age of 36. He was commissioned
a Major into the 1st Michigan Engineers, Field and Staff , in December of
1861. DeCamp had a fairly usual record with the 1st, 1 Officer killed, 12
Enlisted men killed, 341 Enlisted Men dead from disease or accident. The
most casualties came from Bugs, not Bullets during the war. DeCamp survived
the war and was mustered out on October 26th, 1864. He died 34 years later
on July the Fourth, 1898.
His uniform has his name in the sleeve in
India ink with a small rendition of the Engineers emblem (castle) beneath
it. |
